A newly promoted US Air Force officer and Auburn University graduate is among six service members who lost their lives after a refuelling aircraft crashed during a mission in Iraq. The tragedy has left family members, colleagues and the wider military community mourning a life cut short far too soon.

Major Alex Klinner, 33, had been deployed for less than a week when the incident occurred earlier this week. According to family members, he had only recently celebrated a career milestone after being promoted to the rank of major in January. Klinner’s brother-in-law, James Harrill, confirmed the devastating news, describing him as a devoted father and a deeply caring individual. The officer leaves behind his wife, Libby Klinner, and their three young children, including seven-month-old twins and a two-year-old son.

“It’s heartbreaking to say,” Harrill shared. “He was an incredible dad who loved his family more than anything.”

Although the Pentagon has not formally released the identities of all six personnel killed in the crash, several families have begun publicly sharing the loss of their loved ones. Klinner was an eight-year veteran of the US Air Force and originally from Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from Auburn University in 2016 with a degree in mechanical engineering and had built a promising military career marked by dedication and leadership. Outside his professional life, Klinner was known for his love of nature and the outdoors. Family members recalled his enthusiasm for hiking and his willingness to help others without hesitation.

Harrill remembered a moment earlier this year during a family wedding when Klinner quietly stepped in to help without being asked. “He was one of those people who naturally took charge in a calm and steady way,” Harrill said. “At the same time, he was incredibly kind and generous. That combination made him truly special.”

A life devoted to family and service

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Libby Klinner spoke about the deep loss their family now faces. She expressed sorrow that their children will grow up without experiencing their father’s warmth, humour and selflessness.

“They won’t get to see how quickly he would jump up to help someone,” she wrote. “They won’t see how funny he could be or how much love he carried for them.”

The family had recently moved into a new home together, a milestone that now carries painful memories alongside the joy it once represented.

Aircraft crash under investigation

The aircraft involved in the incident was a KC-135 Stratotanker, a refuelling aircraft that plays a crucial role in US military operations. The plane enables fighter jets and other aircraft to remain airborne for extended periods by transferring fuel mid-flight. Military officials confirmed the aircraft went down during a combat mission over what they described as “friendly territory” in western Iraq. Authorities emphasised that early assessments indicate the crash was not caused by hostile action or friendly fire.

The KC-135 has served the US Air Force for more than six decades and remains a key component of its aerial refuelling fleet. According to the Congressional Research Service, hundreds of these aircraft remain in operation across active duty, National Guard and Reserve units.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash as tributes pour in for the service members who lost their lives. For Major Alex Klinner’s family and friends, however, the focus remains on remembering a man defined not only by his military service but also by his dedication to those he loved most.
