As you see CEOs, celebrities, billionaires, people whose opinions matter on Facebook and Twitter pouring a bucket full of ice on their heads and posting the video online, do you wonder what IS the Ice Bucket Challenge and why has it gone viral on social media? What is it that has got everyone drenched by buckets of freezing water in support of ALS? What IS ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS leads to paralysis, vital organ failure and, eventually, death.
The Ice Bucket Challenge dares nominated persons to take a video of them having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads. They have 24 hours to complete the challenge or they will have to donate $100 to the ALS foundation - or both.
