Tesla has received approval from Britain’s energy regulator Ofgem to supply electricity to homes and businesses across Great Britain. The move marks the first such expansion outside the United States for the company run by Elon Musk.

Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer led by Elon Musk, has received regulatory approval to supply electricity to households and businesses in Great Britain. The decision was confirmed by the country’s energy regulator, marking a new step for Tesla’s energy division in the UK market.
The approval allows Tesla’s subsidiary to directly provide electricity to domestic and commercial consumers in Britain. This development comes as the company expands its presence in the energy sector while also navigating challenges in its global car business.
The licence represents a significant move for Tesla’s energy operations and highlights the company’s growing involvement in electricity supply.
According to the regulator, Tesla’s subsidiary, Tesla Energy Ventures, has now been granted the right to supply electricity to consumers across Britain.
Ofgem stated that the company “has been granted a licence authorising it to supply electricity to domestic and non-domestic consumers in Great Britain.”
This means the company can provide electricity to both residential users and businesses within the country.
The regulator also emphasised that every licensing decision is made with a focus on consumer protection and the stability of the energy market.
A spokesperson for Ofgem said that “protecting consumers and maintaining a secure, fair energy market underpins every licensing decision we make.”
The approval allows Tesla Energy Ventures to operate as an electricity supplier in Britain’s regulated power market.
Tesla Energy Ventures had previously applied for the licence in July. The application represented the company’s attempt to become an electricity supplier in Britain.
This step is significant because it marks the first time the operation led by Elon Musk has pursued such a move outside the United States.
The expansion reflects Tesla’s broader strategy of extending its energy-related services into new markets.
While Tesla is widely recognised for manufacturing electric vehicles, the company has also developed energy products and services through its energy division.
The approval to supply electricity in Britain therefore represents an important milestone for the company’s international energy operations.
Tesla Energy Ventures already had a presence in the UK energy sector before receiving the latest approval.
In 2020, the company obtained a licence that allowed it to produce electricity within the country. This production included the use of solar panels.
However, the earlier licence did not permit Tesla to sell the electricity directly to consumers.
The new authorisation changes that situation by enabling the company to supply electricity directly to both households and businesses. Beyond the UK, Tesla Energy Ventures is already active in the United States energy market. The company currently provides electricity across the state of Texas. This experience in supplying power in the US market forms part of Tesla’s broader energy strategy.
The announcement arrives at a time when Tesla’s automotive business is facing challenges. Reports indicate that the company is experiencing a global decline in sales of its cars.
While Tesla remains known primarily for its electric vehicles, the expansion into electricity supply highlights how the company is continuing to diversify its operations.
The move into the British electricity market shows Tesla’s increasing focus on its energy division as it grows beyond its core vehicle manufacturing business.
With the regulatory approval now in place, Tesla Energy Ventures is positioned to begin supplying electricity to homes and businesses across Britain, marking a new phase in the company’s international energy activities.
