The roar of 100,000 fans had barely faded at the Narendra Modi Stadium when Hardik Pandya, who had just delivered a masterclass in clutch performance against New Zealand, got served. The all-rounder, who helped India secure a historic third T20 World Cup title on home soil, is now facing legal issues.

What began as an ecstatic embrace with his partner, Mahieka Sharma, on the ground, amid all the celebration, has now ignited a firestorm of legal fury that threatens to strip the "clutch" hero of his honour.

Hardik Pandya's scandal: The alleged desecration

The celebrations that followed India's 96-run demolition of the Black Caps were meant to be legendary. Instead, they have become a matter of police record. Advocate Wajid Khan has officially went to Shivaji Nagar police station in Pune, demanding the registration of an FIR against the superstar.

The charge? That in the throes of passion and victory, Pandya treated the national flag with a level of "obscene" disregard that borders on criminal.

The complaint stated that the Tricolour, which represents the nation's pride, was reportedly used as part of a personal celebration on the field.

"You must have seen the T20 World Cup here. Hardik Pandya was dancing with his girlfriend in celebration of his victory. The national flag was tied to his back," Khan told ANI.

Invoking the 1971 National Flag Act

For Khan, the brilliance of Pandya's gameplay does not grant him immunity from the law. The advocate is wielding Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act as a weapon, claiming that the cricketer's behaviour - specifically while lying down with Mahieka Sharma - was a direct assault on the dignity of the Republic.

"According to Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, we should respect the dignity of the national flag. However, Hardik Pandya was so lost in the celebration of his victory that he was lying with his girlfriend while wearing the national flag. I believe it is an insult to the national flag."

Why was the case registered in Pune?

A brief exchange reportedly took place at the police station when officers initially noted that the incident occurred in Ahmedabad and questioned whether it fell under their jurisdiction. However, Khan argued that the national flag represents the entire country, and therefore the complaint could also be filed in Pune.

"I have filed a complaint with the Shivaji Nagar police station. They have accepted my complaint and provided me with a copy. Let's see what happens next," he said.

Debate between celebration and patriotism

As the digital world explodes, the narrative is split between those who see a patriot lost in the moment and those who see a celebrity who forgot his roots.

The Loyalists: Argue that Pandya's clutch performance and the historic nature of winning a World Cup at home should overshadow a moment of emotional exuberance.

The Traditionalists: Maintain that the Tricolour is a sacred shroud, not a party cape, and that no athlete is bigger than the colors they represent.

India stands alone as the only three-time T20 World Cup champion, but for Hardik Pandya, the toughest "match" may have just moved from the pitch to the courtroom.
