Britney Spears’s ex-husband Sam Asghari has said the pop star was “oppressed” by people in her life, while expressing hope that she can recover following her recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence. Asghari made the remarks during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, where he was primarily discussing tensions involving his native Iran but was asked about Spears’ ongoing personal struggles.

During the interview, the 32-year-old actor and fitness trainer said that coming from Iran, he has witnessed women being oppressed, and that Spears had also experienced a form of oppression from people who took advantage of her. He clarified that he was not directly comparing the situations but said it was difficult for him to see someone in the United States facing such circumstances. Asghari added that despite their separation, he continues to respect Spears and supports her wellbeing. The pair were together for about seven years before marrying in June 2022. Their relationship began in 2016 after they met while filming the music video for Spears’ song “Slumber Party.”

Arrest puts renewed spotlight on Spears

The comments come days after Spears, 44, was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol following reports of erratic highway driving. A 911 dispatch recording reportedly captured details of the incident. She was later released and is scheduled to appear in court on May 4. Spears had fired her sobriety coach weeks before the arrest. Police have also reportedly been called to her home multiple times over the past two years. Asghari declined to discuss the arrest in detail during another interview, saying his focus remained on the situation involving Iran, which he described as a larger issue deserving attention.

Conservatorship history still shapes the narrative

Spears’ personal life has remained under public scrutiny since her well-known conservatorship, which was put in place in 2008 after a series of public mental health struggles. The legal arrangement placed control of many aspects of her life and finances under court supervision and continued until November 2021. Spears and Asghari married several months after the conservatorship ended, but their marriage lasted just over a year. Asghari filed for divorce in August 2023 citing irreconcilable differences, and the split was finalized in December 2024. Kevin Federline, Spears’ former husband and father of her two sons, has also spoken publicly following the arrest, saying he hopes for the best for her and that she will accept help if it is needed.
