Fans of One Piece finally have something big to celebrate. After a long three-year wait, the live-action pirate saga has returned - and so has the unstoppable swordsman played by Japanese actor Mackenyu aka Mackenyu Arata.
When Netflix released all eight episodes of ONE PIECE: Into the Grand Line on March 10, viewers quickly noticed one thing: Mackenyu's transformation into Roronoa Zoro looks even more intense this time around. And judging by the buzz online, fans cannot stop talking about it.
The first season already showed Mackenyu in impressive physical condition. But as filming for the second installment approached, the actor pushed his training even further to embody the legendary swordsman.
Before returning to the set, Mackenyu underwent a dramatic physical transformation that left fans stunned. Photos of the actor's bulked-up look quickly spread across social media, especially on X (formerlt Twitter), where viewers praised his commitment to the role.
The transformation sparked viral reactions, with many netizens pointing out just how closely he now resembles the anime's battle-ready warrior.
The effort behind that transformation was no small feat. According to Mackenyu's personal trainer, preparing the actor for season two required a strict and demanding regimen.
The trainer later revealed details of the process on Instagram, explaining that Mackenyu trained relentlessly to perfect his Zoro physique.
"Yes, I'm Mackenyu's trainer, and I helped prepare him for Season 2. I also had the pleasure of training Iñaki Godoy for his shirtless scene, which has also been causing quite a stir on social media. Mackenyu trained seven days a week for three hours each session and followed a strict meal plan prepared by my team.
In fact, I had to force him to have one cheat meal a week. He is easily one of the most dedicated clients I've ever worked with and put everything into getting ready for his role. Some days we even trained directly after night shoots at 2 a.m. at MyGym Cape Town-that's the level of dedication Mackenyu brings. These guys worked incredibly hard to give fans the very best. Just wait for Season 3 - Mackenyu as Zoro is going to look even more incredible."
Training sessions reportedly happened daily, sometimes immediately after late-night filming. Even a single cheat meal per week had to be encouraged - highlighting just how seriously the actor took the challenge.
In the story, Zoro remains the Straw Hat crew's stoic and fiercely loyal swordsman. Played by Mackenyu, the character is known for his iconic three-sword style, his intimidating stare, and his unwavering determination.
Season two raises the stakes for the crew as they venture deeper into the Grand Line in search of the world's ultimate treasure. With stronger enemies and more dangerous adventures ahead, Zoro's combat skills will once again be pushed to the limit.
Season one already delivered some of the series' most memorable fight sequences through Zoro's battles. Now, with Mackenyu's upgraded physique and dedication, the second season looks ready to deliver even more explosive action.
