Who is Aaron Edwards? Veteran NYPD chief goes viral after jumping barricade during bomb suspect

Aaron Edwards has recently grabbed national attention after a dramatic photo of him leaping over a barricade while pursuing a suspect near Gracie Mansion went viral online. The moment unfolded during a tense incident outside the residence of politician Zohran Mamdani, where an anti-Islam protest reportedly escalated, with demonstrators allegedly lighting homemade explosive devices. As the chaotic scene spread across social media, many were left wondering what exactly happened and who the NYPD chief at the centre of the viral image is.



According to authorities, the suspects allegedly involved in the attack were inspired by the extremist group Islamic State. As reported by CBS News, Jessica Tisch described the internet as "a planned attack motivated by extremist ideology and inspired by a violent foreign terrorist organisation."

Amid the tense situation, Aaron Edwards and fellow officer Luis Navarro were commended for their swift response. A viral photo from the scene showed Edwards jumping over a barricade while pursuing and tackling one of the suspects.

Speaking to CBS News in an exclusive interview, Edwards reflected on the moment, saying that there was a point when he realised the situation was far more serious than he had initially imagined.

Aaron Edwards is a veteran officer who has reportedly served with the New York City Police Department for more than two decades. He joined the force in 2003 and steadily rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the borough chief of Manhattan North in December 2023.

According to Jessica Tisch, Edwards was inspired to pursue a career in law enforcement after witnessing the action of NYPD officers during the September 11 attacks. Over the years, he had served in several key roles, including in the department's Office of Public Information, the crime bureau at the 17th Precinct on Manhattan’s east side, and the narcotics unit in Midtown South.

In February 2026, Edwards was also honoured as "Man of the Year" by the NYPD Guardians Association.



Images capturing the intense moment have been spreading rapidly online, showing Aaron Edwards in the middle of the action. The New York City Police Department also posted from the scene where Edwards can be seen vaulting over a metal barricade while chasing a suspect.

Speaking about the incident later, Edwards explained that the quick leap was fuelled by adrenaline during the high-pressure situation.
